Even if you’ve never visited, you’re probably aware that Iceland is unique. The Northern Lights, the cinematic setting, and the mind-boggling rotation of everyday weather patterns are all talked about. And one of our favorite aspects of this island is its unwavering commitment to all things cozy, which includes its numerous bars.
The country’s greatest bars are in the capital city, but you won’t have trouble finding a pint of beer, a glass of wine, or a shot of Brennivin in the countryside’s watering spots. They’re usually tied to a hotel or bed & breakfast, or they double as a café during the day and a little livelier scene at night. If you want to experience the bustle of a bar filled with chat, music, and people from all over the world, book a night (or three) in Reykjavik.
Reykjavik’s bar culture may be warm and inviting. After all, this destination’s winters can be terrible, and everything looks a little nicer by candlelight. However, the ambiance may also be rowdy, clubby, and, on occasion, a full-fledged dance party. You’ll discover the five bars ahead, each with its distinct feel and welcoming faces, that I make it a point to visit on every trip to the Land of Fire and Ice.
1. Priki
Priki is one to visit twice if you’re looking for a pub that perfectly transitions from day tonight. Weekend lineups can be long, but persevere – this is the city’s hip-hop mecca (both local and international). Before the dance party truly gets going, there are always bands playing, a DJ set, or a comedian on stage. Priki is one of the city’s oldest restaurants, with interiors that haven’t changed much since 1951. Head home for a nap, however, return for breakfast, where the quantities are large enough to help you recover from your hangover.
2. Kaffibarinn
It’s impossible to discuss Icelandic bars without including Kaffibarinn. Many things about this location are outstanding, however, the change from “quaint café” to “let’s do shots!” is at the top of the list. There are a lot of pubs that double as cafés daytime, but Kaffibarinn’s crowds and commitment to at least one spontaneous dance party per night on weekends should be enough to warrant a visit. It’s the ideal place to get a boost of energy before continuing your night. There is a more modest space for relaxing and holding barely audible discussions for individuals who don’t want to go all-in on a disco bar.
3. Veur
Veur is a small cocktail bar within a short walk of the city center’s major streets, making it a popular gathering spot for locals. This restaurant is famed for its menu, which includes all of the classics prepared with top-of-the-line products. There will also be a rotating range of seasonal cocktails for the more adventurous consumers. This pub has all of the elements of a terrific spot to spend a lot of time, but the window sitting in the front area — perfect for people watching — and a secondary space downstairs with soft sofas take it to the next level. When you step in, you’re whisked out of the wild weather and into a warm, inviting place that’s candlelit and created with rich colors and textures.
4. Einstök Pub
Einstök Pub is a relatively new addition to the Reykjavik bar scene, dubbed after the beer it manufactures. On a Friday or Saturday evening, the tables put up outside for customers become the No. 1 destination to people watch on Laugavegur. A waiter will even come out and offer you a duvet if it’s a chilly night. Einstök is a brewing company based in Akureyri, Iceland’s northernmost city. At this pub, you can sample any of their beers, and there’s plenty of room for large crowds. If you’re traveling during the summer, don’t miss the White Ale or the Arctic Berry Ale.
5. Vnstkan Tu Sopar
If you’re looking for tapas and wine, head to Laugavegur, one of the city’s busiest streets, for a hidden escape from the masses. It’s not simple to locate, however, if you can discover the side steps on the corner (you’ve gone too far if you find Te & Kaffi! ), you’ll be pleased. Vnstkan Tu sopar features a fascinating blend of wines, ranging from more typical reds and whites to eccentric oranges and weird effervescent varietals, making it an excellent choice for a diverse group. This wine bar also offers a modest tapas menu, which includes cheeses and Padrones pimientos.
Conclusion
While these are great ways to start (or end) your night, one of the best plays is to find a place and roam through the crowded streets when you’re ready to switch venues. This little hamlet, located beneath Arctic Circle, has a plethora of taverns.
