It’s getting warmer and warmer…finally! The perfect time to plan your summer trip. With this article, we would like to inspire you and show you the most beautiful travel destinations for the summer holidays in Germany.
From dreamy landscapes for a hiking holiday to crystal clear lakes, these holiday destinations in Germany can easily compete with the most beautiful travel destinations in Europe.
1. Walchensee
75 km from Munich in the beautiful Kochel am See is the Walchensee, also known as the Bavarian Caribbean.
We want to reveal this secret today if you have ever wondered where Lake Walchen got its turquoise color. It comes from the limestone crystals of the Karwendel. It is 800 meters above sea level, and with a depth of around 200 meters, it is also one of the deepest alpine lakes in Germany.
Activities around the Walchensee are hiking, swimming, and stand-up paddling. In addition, the lake invites you to take a walk and unwind.
Kochel am See a lot to offer. Whether by bike or camper, Lake Walchensee is always worth visiting.
Around the Walchensee there are some nice parking lots where you can have a picnic and swim.
Camping at the Walchensee is also possible. You can choose between an overnight car park and a campsite with 75 parking spaces and 35 tent sites.
2. The Black Forest
Holidaying in the Black Forest is probably on everyone’s bucket list. We could spend a few days there every year.
The Black Forest is located in Baden-Württemberg and is a trendy travel destination, whether hiking, climbing, visiting the Europa Park, the beautiful Triberg waterfalls, or relaxing in the thermal baths in the Black Forest. There is something for everyone here.
The Murg valley in the Black Forest is also beautiful; the Murg is a small tributary of the Rhine and extends through the valley of the same name.
Here you can also visit the Schwarzenbach dam. A masterpiece of engineering and only a stone’s throw away from the Murg Valley.
Hiking enthusiasts can look forward to a network of over 45 premium hiking trails in the Black Forest. One of the most popular hiking trails is the Murgleiter in the northern Black Forest. It is 110 km long but can also be run in stages.
Another highlight is the Schluchsee in the southern Black Forest. This invites you to go sailing, cycling and swimming. There is even the possibility of getting a driving license for more action.
You get a little more city feeling in Freiburg im Breisgau. The town is built in medieval style and is a great photo spot in the Black Forest. There are many restaurants and a friendly weekly market in the old city.
3. Usedom
We were on Usedom for the first time in 2019 and fell in love. With more than 1,900 hours of sunshine a year, Usedom is rightly called the sunny island. In addition to miles of beaches, dunes, and imperial baths, there is a lot to experience on the Baltic Sea island. Every summer holidaymaker gets their money’s worth here, from island safaris to bike tours to spa & wellness offers.
Memorable sights on Usedom are the Usedom Island Nature Park, the Bansin coast, the climbing forest near Ückeritz, and the Imperial Baths.
4. Eifel
For us, the Eifel is one of the top destinations for a summer holiday in Germany.
Around the small town of Daun, there are about 20 sights, and the famous Dreimühlen waterfall is one of them. The Eifel invites you to hikes, bike tours, wine tastings, and visits to the beautiful castles. A visit to the famous Eltz Castle is an absolute must. By the way, it is a great photo spot!
The Eifel is also home to some lakes and streams. Especially in summer, the lakes invite you to cool off. We also recommend a picnic in the mountain regions. More love of nature is almost impossible! The Rursee is particularly beautiful.
5. Lüneburg Heath
For us, the Lüneburg Heath is one of the most beautiful places on the list. With around 2,000 km of cycle paths and the approx. 200 km long hiking trail from Hamburg to Celle (divided into 13 stages), you can enjoy the beautiful landscape.
We recommend the blossom barometer if you want to know precisely when the best travel time for a holiday in the Lüneburg Heath is to see the heather blossom. It is said that the heather blooms from the beginning of August to the beginning of September, but the actual time depends on the weather and can vary.
Apart from hiking and cycling in the Lüneburg Heath, you can also ride the Ilmnau SUB or have a picnic by the river.
Other sights in the Lüneburg Heath are the Pietzmoor, Totengrund, and the approx. 17,000 Heidschnucke sheep that tend the heath every day.

6. Muenster
The St. Paulus Cathedral in the city center is one of the sights of Münster. It is located in the heart of Münster and is one of the city’s landmarks.
When we travel to Münster, we always try to see the weekly market in the cathedral square.

We recommend that you take a walk from the market square through the old town of Münster to Lake Aasee. A lap around the Aasee is approx. 6.5 km, so easy to manage.
