10 Distillery Hotels to Visit Around the World

10 Distillery Hotels to Visit Around the World

These days, the top hotels provide much more than just a place of rest. The latest resort attraction is none other than an onsite distillery, in addition to a multitude of activities, superb spas, and award-winning restaurants. Distillery hotels include tours of the facilities, information about the heritage and process of production, and, perhaps most importantly, the chance to sample craft spirits that you might not find in your local liquor shop.

Be it Pisco in Peru, mezcal and tequila in Mexico, or whiskey in Scotland, there are hotels all over the world — and even those closer to home — that cater to drinkers. We’ve compiled a list of ten of the top distillery hotels.

1. Casa Silencio, Oaxaca, México

Casa Silencio is a beautifully built boutique hotel that also houses one of Mezcal El Silencio’s three distilleries. The walls of this opulent 16-acre property are made of rammed earth; the ceilings were created with reclaimed Oaxacan wood; much of it is powered by solar energy, and they have instituted a no-waste policy. There are only six suites in all, each with its unique design and amenities such as faded leather accents, hand-woven wool carpets, and spa-like bathrooms with monolith stone sinks. But, as impressive as the accommodations are, it’s the hotel’s immersive experience that truly sets it apart. You’ll be able to get a true sense of mezcal by slicing up the agave used to make the spirit, viewing the distillery, and, of course, drinking the liquor alongside meals prepared by Top Chef Mexico winner Rodolfo Castellanos. Take a seat at the restaurant’s 53-foot-long communal table, which was hand-carved from a single slab of basalt, and sample typical Oaxacan gastronomy prepared by executive chef Daniel Robles Sumano, followed by a nightcap at their secret after-hours bar.

The Cavalier Virginia Beach Autograph Collection reopened in 2018 after a four-year refurbishment and the addition of an on-site distillery, Tarnished Truth Distilling Company. Vendome Copper and Brass Works manufactured all of the equipment at Tarnished Truth, and they distilled bourbon, rye, vodka, gin, and other spirits there. From Thursday to Sunday, tours and tastings are provided, as well as a private area for events and special paired dinners. Relax at the full-service spa, swim in the indoor pool, or relax by the ocean at the new beach club while visiting Virginia Beach’s grande dame, which is designated on the National Register of Historic Places.

3. Distillery Inn, Carbondale, Colorado

The small hamlet of Carbondale, Colorado, is about 30 miles northwest of Aspen and is home to the appropriately called Distillery Inn. Only five suites are available at the tiny resort, each with a fireplace, balcony or patio, and bespoke minibar. The on-site Marble Distilling Co. makes vodka, whiskey, coffee, and “gingercello” liqueurs, all of which can be savored in their tasting room, at Marble Bar alongside live entertainment, or delivered directly to your hotel.

Bowmore, Islay’s first permitted distillery, has been producing Scotch whisky since 1779. They take delight in using traditional methods like floor-malting to give honor to the spirit’s roots. While tours are presently on pause owing to COVID-19 measures, tastings and gift store visits are accessible on a first-come, first-served basis. Bowmore Cottages, which date back to the 1840s and were previously home to Bowmore’s distillery workers, offers five distinct lodgings ranging from one to four bedrooms for visitors who choose to stay. Aside from that, the company also runs Harbour Inn, which has seven modern rooms as well as a restaurant and bar that frequently serves fresh seafood obtained by local fishermen.

Once it comes to gin and England, the juniper-infused alcohol has a tumultuous history, but there’s no denying that the juniper-infused spirit is linked with the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom’s first distillery hotel is located on London’s iconic Portobello Road, which is fitting. The “Ginstitute” crew blends their gin in the basement using nine botanicals sourced from all over the world, including Tuscany’s juniper berries and orris, lemon peel from Spain, bitter orange rind from Haiti or Morocco, and nutmeg from Indonesia. Customers can make their blend with the help of an expert or participate in a session on how to produce the perfect gin drink. The hotel also offers a shop selling Portobello Road Gin, a pub serving traditional British fare, and a cocktail lounge serving highballs and mixed drinks alongside a menu of small snacks. Rest your head in one of their three upstairs rooms, each of which has a record player and a fully equipped minibar. If you’re looking for a change of pace from gin, the facility also offers workshops using agave-based spirits and whiskey.

Every morning from Monday through Saturday, customers can take a private tour of the facilities and learn about the production process while sampling the company’s tequilas, which range from Blanco to Añejo.

The beautiful environment reminded the Scottish immigrants of their country when they arrived on Cape Breton Island in the early 1880s, and they named this portion of Canada Nova Scotia, which means “New Scotland” in Latin. Glenora Inn & Distillery, which properly creates Scottish-style whisky, is located here. In 1990, Bruce Jardin opened North America’s first single-malt whiskey distillery, enlisting the help of Bowmore Distillers for production training and procuring authentic Scottish copper pot stills and a mash tun for his facility. From mid-May to late October, the property invites visitors on a seasonal basis and offers daily excursions and tastings of various expressions. You can stay in a variety of rustic lodgings, including old inn rooms and private log cabins, as well as a bar and restaurant where you can drink and dine while enjoying live music.

Brush Creek Ranch, located in Saratoga, Wyoming, on 30,000 acres of rolling hills, provides guests with a variety of activities such as horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, and snowboarding in the winter. In addition to all of these activities, the resort features a brand new on-site distillery that opened in 2019 and produces bourbon, rye, gin, and vodka, among other spirits. During your visit, you’ll be able to tour the factory, sample their full product line, and potentially even partake in a barrel tasting if one is available. There are three all-inclusive properties to choose from when it comes to overnight accommodations: The Lodge & Spa, which has standalone cabins as well as traditional hotel rooms in the main building; the adults-only Magee Homestead, which has residential-style cabins; and the more secluded and private French Creek.

9. Hacienda La Caravedo, Ica, Perú

Hacienda La Caravedo has been producing Pisco since 1684, making it the Americas’ oldest continually operating distillery. Caravedo Pisco is handmade in small amounts from estate-grown grapes and adheres to the spirit’s Denomination of Origin criteria. A tiny hotel with only five rooms is attached to the distillery. Enjoy the magnificent views of the lush vineyards while on the property, partake in a Pisco sampling, and relax poolside with a cocktail in hand while you take in the Ica Valley.

During Prohibition, the fishing community of Ranier, Minnesota, was a favorite spot for smuggling alcohol across a cantilever bridge from Canada to the United States. Cantilever Distillery & Hotel was founded in honor of the destination’s history, and the resort produces bourbon, rye, gin, and vodka using local grains. In the Cocktail Room restaurant and bar, you may take a tour of the distillery and try their spirits. When you’re ready for a restful night’s sleep, the boutique hotel provides industrial-style rooms with high ceilings, clawfoot tubs or walk-in showers, and sumptuous linen.
